The hippocampus serves as a critical section of the brain responsible for a variety of tasks, namely Memory Formation, Spacial Navigation, and Sequence Learning.

The Hippocampus is a key component of the Medial Temporal Lobe system, and oftentimes is modeled computationally as it plays a vital role in memory/information encoding, retrieval, and consolidation/compression.

We consider the hippocampus to be one of the most important and interesting brain structures in Computational Neuroscience, as it has a part in just about all the interesting functions of the brain. In addition to the memory and spatial navigation tasks, the hippocampus is also involved in the Formation of New Neurons and Neurogenesis.
